Nintendo Switch presentation – Every announcement and trailer on one page

zelda-botwWell, it finally happened. Nintendo finally lifted the lid on the Switch and revealed all the juicy details.

The problem is, it did it in Japan. Which meant here in the UK we had to get up at 4am to see it.

Yer man Scullion did it. Because he’s a maniac. But there’s a real possibility you didn’t. Maybe you had work or school the next day, or maybe just “fuck that”.

The thing is, if that’s the case and you’ve just woken up and are ready to head out, you don’t have time to watch an hour-long presentation.

Enter yer man Scullion (not like that, you deviant).

There now follows a complete list – on one page for your convenience – of every single announcement made during the presentation, in the order it was made. Underneath the list, you’ll find all the game trailers added to the Nintendo YouTube account after the presentation ended.

Give this a quick read and head to work or school safe in the knowledge that you’re all clued up and won’t have anything ruined for you by the loudmouth guy who did stay up. Because he’ll be fucking exhausted by noon and you’ll still be strutting like a champ.

This is only the beginning of the story though. I’ll be in London today attending the UK Switch Premiere, so keep checking my Twitter feed throughout the day for live videos and my instant reactions to some of the games announced, then continue to check the site regularly throughout the week for a series of detailed hands-on articles.

Thanks guys!

Presentation announcements (in order)

• Release date 3 March worldwide at a price of 29,980 yen, $299.99 and £279.99.

• Switch will have online multiplayer. You can use a smart device to invite players to games, chat etc. This will become a paid service in ‘Fall 2017’.

willdo

• Nintendo Switch will be region free.

• Being sold as a “home console gaming system that gives you the freedom to change your play style”, rather than a handheld.

• TV mode will let you “play games on your TV in typical video game style”. Table mode lets you stand it up on a table and play multiplayer with Joycon controllers. Handheld mode lets you attach the Joy Con controllers and play on the move.

• Battery life will range from 2.5 hours to 6.5 hours depending on the game.

USB-C charging.

• Screen has a capacitive touch panel (which means multi-touch like a smartphone).

• Wi-Fi for online multiplayer, Nintendo’s own connectivity for local multiplayer.

• The Joy Con controllers are the left and right controllers that attach to the side of the Switch. They also attach to a ‘Joy Con Grip’: this is the name for the controller you use to play it on your TV.

• Joy Cons have analogue sticks (which click in). The right Joy Con has a Home button and reads NFC, the left one has a record button for capturing screens (and later video).

• Each Joy Con has accelerometers and motion sensors.

• Each Joy Con has its own L and R buttons when they’re separated. These are hidden when you connect them to the Switch.

• There will be neon blue and neon red Joy Cons, and you can slide a wrist strap onto them for games that require Wii Remote-style controls.

• Right Joy Con has a motion IR camera which can tell the distance of objects (like your hand) and the difference between ‘rock, paper and scissors’.

• Joy Con controllers have some sort of HD rumble which is so precise you can pretend you’re holding a glass of water and tell how many ice cubes are in it.

• First confirmed game is 1-2-Switch. Being marketed as “a game everyone can play together”. Each player uses the Joy Con’s ‘HD Rumble’ to offer a game that can be played without any screen. You can play it by looking into your opponent’s eyes and judging when they’re going to move. Being created as ‘a staple for parties’. Releases on 3 March alongside Switch.

• Second confirmed game is Arms. It’s a fighting game wherre your character has extendable arms. You hold both Joy Cons, which sense your motions. When you throw a punch, as you twist your wrist your arms curve to the side. You can tilt the Joy Cons to move sideways. Although it’s designed for anyone to play, it’s also made in a way that experts can learn advanced strategies. Looks interesting, keen to try it out later today. Arms won’t be a launch game, it’ll release in Spring.

• Third confirmed game is Splatoon 2. Proper sequel, not a Switch port of the original. Still has 4-on-4 Turf War battles. Now adds new weapons called Splat Duellies, which let you dual wield. Still has gyro controls for aiming. Splatoon 2 is out in summer, not a launch game. Will once again have level and weapon updates after launch as with the previous game.

• Fourth confirmed game is Super Mario Odyssey. Essentially Galaxy 3. Puts Mario in a variety of weird environments, from real world to cartoon levels. You really have to see the trailer for this one to see what I mean. Looks incredible. His hat has eyes for some reason. The theme is “a journey to an unknown world”. Will be released in Holiday 2017.

• Fifth confirmed game is Xenoblade Chronicles 2, a new Monolith Soft title. Only showed a trailer with cut-scenes.

• Sixth game is Fire Emblem Warriors from Koei Tecmo, similar to Hyrule Warriors but with Fire Emblem.

• Third party games discussed, with over 80 games in development.

Dragon Quest X and Dragon Quest XI have already been announced for Japan. Dragon Quest Heroes 1 & 2 will also be coming.

• A new Shin Megami Tensei game powered by Unreal Engine 4.

Project Octopath Traveller from Square Enix. Brand new RPG with old-school pixel characters in detailed worlds.

• Nagoshi-san from Sega committing to developing Switch games.

Skyrim re-confirmed for Switch.

• Suda 51 appears on stage to confirm that a new No More Heroes game will be coming to Switch. Title hasn’t been decided yet.

• Partick Soderlund of EA appears on stage to confirm support for Switch. EA Sports FIFA on Switch confirmed.

• Games montage showing off a bunch of third-party games. Sonic, Just Dance, FIFA, Minecraft, etc. Street Fighter and Bomberman games also briefly shown, as well as Mario Kart (later confirmed to be called Mario Kart 8 Deluxe), NBA 2K18, Lego City Undercover and more. Too many to list, will try to get the video and post it below.

• Switch will include the console, left and right Joy Cons, wrist straps, the Grip, the Dock, an HDMI cable and an AC adapter. The Pro Controller will be sold separately.

• Two versions: one with grey Joy Cons, one with blue and red Joy Cons. Same price.

• Presentation cuts to Nintendo Europe. Switch events will be confirmed soon so the public can try it before it comes out.

• Presentation cuts to Nintendo of America. Reggie confirms that The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild will launch alongside the Switch console worldwide on 3 March 2017. Bombshell dropped, conference ends.

Announcements made after the presentation

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe launches on 28 April. Will include all DLC from the Wii U version plus new characters: Inkling Boy, Inkling Girl, King Boo, Dry Bones and Bower Jr. Will include Balloon Battle and Bob-omb Blast modes. Players can carry two items at a time and old items like the Ghost and Feather will be returning. TV mode will be 1080p.

Ultra Street Fighter II coming to Switch. Will let you switch between pixel-art graphics or HD graphics and adds two new characters, Evil Ryu and Violent Ken.

• Battery life will vary depending on game: Breath Of The Wild “can be played for roughly three hours on a single charge”. USB-C charging means that theoretically it can be charged with battery packs you’d use for a phone.

Zelda: Breath Of The Wild will have an optional Special Edition. The UK one comes with a music CD and a Master Sword of Resurrection figure and will cost £89.99.

Snipperclips: Cut It Out Together is an “action puzzle game” launching on the eShop in March. Players cut paper characters into new shapes. There’s also a multiplayer mode where the shapes players cut out can be joined to make larger creations.

• After you take screenshots using the Capture button on the left Joy-Con, you can add text to them and share them on social networks via the console’s Album feature.

• Switch has 32GB of internal memory, which can be expanded with microSDXC cards. Theoretically these go up to 1TB in size but it hasn’t been confirmed if sizes that large are supported. The system has a Micro SD card slot on the back so you’d imagine you’d be able to have a collection of Micro SD cards, each containing a number of games.

• Ubisoft will release Rayman Legends Definitive Edition, Steep and Just Dance 2017 at launch.

Skylanders Imaginators launching on Switch on 12 March.

• Nicalis is bringing Redout to Switch. It’s “a tribute to F-Zero, WipEout and Rollcage”. Trailer can be seen below.

The Binding Of Isaac: Afterbirth+ coming to Switch in Spring.

Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap is coming to Switch in 2017.

Sonic Mania confirmed for Switch. Trailer below.

Super Bomberman R is coming to Switch. Trailer below.

  1. Cheers for getting up at 4am so people like me didn’t have to! I read this on my way in to work so a big thanks for the low down on the switch event Chris.

  2. Superbly done. Deeply unsure about NYC in Super Mario Odyssey. I think it may have been better to launch Christmas time and have the larger launch library to go with it.

  3. Stayed up to watch this. Went in wanting to hear some specs but what we got was much better.

Only slight disappointments were online multiplayer becoming paid-only and the battery life being as low as 2.5 hours.

It’s good to see them trying to catch up with PSN and Xbox Live at least, and we can probably expect more online games to make the subscription worth it.

Battery’s not much concern as I fully expect third-party Switch cases with built in batteries to be released in the future, and it’s not as if we don’t all have USB battery packs for our phones and tablets anyway. My Nvidia Shield tablet doesn’t have amazing battery life and that thing doesn’t even bother trying to run Breath of the Wild, so in the end these are such minor issues compared to the awesome new stuff we’ve seen:

The Joy-cons are tiny Wiimotes! So cute!

It’s a capacitive touchscreen! Fingerprints all over everything CONFIRMED!

Region-free! It’s nice to have the option even if only twelve people will use it!

    ZELDA DAY ONE!

Going to the London event on Sunday and I seriously cannot wait.
